The spikes are sharpened, engines tuned and riders ready to race as the 2016 Astana Expo FIM Ice Speedway Gladiators World Championship begins in earnest next month. Thanks to good weather conditions, all the preliminary qualification rounds have been completed, and with a new series partner there is high anticipation that this year’s series could be the best for some years.
New Title partner: The FIM and Astana Expo 2017 have signed an agreement for the next two years. Astana Expo 2017* is the company responsible for the organisation of Expo 2017 in Astana, Kazakhstan. In 2016, the second round of the individual championship will be held in the capital Almaty on 20 and 21 February.
First Training Camp: This year for the first time the FIM organised an Ice Speedway training camp, held in Ylitornio, Finland, where, under the supervision of Ice Race Co-ordinator Jouni Seppänen, 18 young racers were given the opportunity to train on a frozen lake. Over a four-day period they were given the chance to practice under the expert guidance of former World Champions ‘Posa’ Serenius and the ‘Flying Finn’ Jarmo Hirvasoja as well as Swedish champion Stefan Svensson. Riders from Germany, Finland, Sweden, Austria, The Netherlands, Great Britain, Norway and far-away Australia took part and all voted the camp a resounding success. It is hoped that this initiative will help to develop the next generation of Ice Gladiators and the boost the expansion of the World Championship to new regions.

Swedish Ice racing league Strömsund - 02.01.2016

The star Frank Zorn delivered and impressed with the full pot when the premier division ice racing series premiered in Strömsund on Saturday. The home team was also victorious after tough battle against Övik.
Around 150 spectators were in place when Strömsunds MC inaugurated the new banstaketet around the ice racing oval in substantial winter with minus 5 degrees and little wind. The contest was prolonged because of somersaults, stop and overtaken heats.
The run was then Strömsunds Frank Zorn absolutely outstanding. He won all heats and drove home twelve points. Stefan Svensson, Övik, VM-seventh in last year, and the son Niclas Svensson drove both home eleven points.
- The training will pay off. But it was too short race, said Frank Zorn and smiled.
Home rider Jimmy Olsen stood for a promising premiere. Showed great speed and took eight points.
- Fairly good! The speed is there. Feels much better than last year, says Jimmy Olsen.
The drivers were treated to hard to drive "Russian-ice".
- Yes, really choppy and jumpy. Big difference compared to Lungre. You are spoiled with ice. It made the starts was particularly important, but it is not my best branch, said the PA Lindstrom, Jämtlander running of Gävle.
PA lacked proper speed, but was in all cases better and better the longer the evening stage. A total of six points.
The series was supposed to continue with the second round in the morning in Övik, but is deferred because there is too little snow to build dikes.
